Star studded and not woke
"Cold Mountain" features a cornucopia of stars in a Civil War love story. Imagine you're one of the most handsome men in the world, Jude Law, walking home to one of the most beautiful women in the world, Nicole Kidman, and another of the most beautiful women in the world, Natalie Portman, invites you into her home and her bed. Hollywood world problems.
Unfortunately, Renee Zellweger's poor acting took me out of immersion. She made her character cartoony and an inaccurate representation of a Blue Mountains hillbilly.
Aside from that, you can get wrapped up in the movie's chimeric combination of love and war. The romance is a stereotypical female fantasy. It is love at first sight and sealed only by a kiss, and yet it will survive years of separation and overcome all obstacles. Meanwhile, the combat is intense and will more appeal to the male audience. The war scenes are at the start, devolving to personal violence later.
If this movie were produced today, there would be mandatory DEI modifications. Renee Zellweger would be replaced by a black woman, since she plays the role of the competent farm manager in contrast with Kidman's cultured but mostly helpless white Southern Belle. Black slaves would get a heroic role after being mistreated, not a cameo where they flee after being offered a dollar for an egg. Jude would be replaced by a mixed race guy, because he is the main good guy, and it would be mandatory that all the white males are evil. They might even replace Kidman with a dude. Fortunately, this movie preceded Wokeness.
If you're looking for a movie to watch with your better half (opposite sex, right, right?!), this is an excellent choice.
