When an elusive thief whose high-stakes heists unfold along the iconic 101 freeway in Los Angeles eyes the score of a lifetime, with hopes of this being his final job, his path collides with a disillusioned insurance broker who is facing her own crossroads. Held my attention
After years of unwatchable cinema, this film held my attention for the duration. For the most part, the characters were plausible and I was able to forget that the 2 male leads knew one another as Thor and Banner...
Slight wokeness included female wish-fulfillment, where a mid Karen can make demands of the Aspy-Asgardian (an awkward Reacher-clone), who only wants to appease her. Also Banner-cop spreading the wealth and goodness despite being surrounded by corruption. We get no real explanation why these guys are the way they are despite the enormous pressure put on them to be jerks. The obligatory mulatto-chick didn't seem too forced, thanks to Halle Berry's portrayal of worn-out insurance exec and I didn't even recognise Jennifer Jason Leigh as the long-suffering Banner's wife. Her role was to twist the knife but he was just too nice to get Ruffalo'd.
Some plot-holes mar this otherwise enjoyable film, including unresolved fence (an ancient Nick Nolte) and hacker arcs, and why the otherwise cautious lead suddenly forgetting years of discipline and blowing his modus operandum. Oh and, of course, returning and risking life imprisonment for the entitled shrew in plain clothing... Seems like a lot of movies blow their wad in the last quarter - after you've paid and are trapped in your seat, naturally... Still, it's a pretty good watch after years of Tinsel-town tripe.
