Best Reboot of all Time

As a huge fan of the books, I am completely jacked to see part two and beyond. Hope they keep going with this! Wokeness is non existent. They changed the gender and race of two Characters. Not a big deal. Did not change or harm the story at all. Some of the best special effects I have ever seen. The 1980’s Dune is a cult classic. This movie is a masterpiece!

Awful

My goodness this was bad !
Terrible and annoying soundtrack, dire acting, barely audible & poor dialogue, bad editing and direction, no character development, terrible casting, laughably 'cheap' looking costumes and a complete snoozefest. Just really bad and an insult to Frank Herbert's original book, regardless if his woke son gave it the tick of approval or not. Money can do funny things to people.

Wokeness from director (paraphrased) : "There are not enough women in Dune so I'm going to change the sex of one of the more important male characters" - This coming from the director who CLAIMS to love the source material and promised to be faithful to it. Ha !

Liet, you are now a woman. You are no longer the powerful defacto KING of the Fremen and the Father of Chani, Paul's love but you are now a woman. Yeah, that makes the story oh so much better and doesn't mess things up even slightly ! (I'm being sarcastic folks).
Ughh, this film !

BTW Dune has arguably the most powerful group of women ever devised in fiction - the Bene Gesserit and the director does this ?!!?!
WOKE WOKE WOKE !!!

Also Paul was never a brooding emo boy but was an incredibly intelligent, articulate and confident & capable young man, in no small part due to his intensive training begun on Caladan, definitely not some wimp that mumbles through his teeth !

The only thing good I can say about this travesty is that it has the word Dune in it but then so does Dune Buggy (they are actually good) ;)

Even with it's flaws, I believe David Lynch's 1984 adaptation is superior in every way imaginable......except perhaps for the modern visual technology but that couldn't save this mess and they weren't particularly inspiring at all.

For a direct comparison of both movies, examine the Gom Jabbar and Pain Amplifier box scene.
That should make my point pretty obvious and that is just a single example.
Absolutely no suspense, Mohiam's use of voice is essentially non-existent and oh, the terrible acting ! - Yes I am referring to the 'new' movie.

This modern Dune is soulless and IMHO, bordering on absolute garbage.

Good sci fi movie.

I’m not familiar with the source material, so I can’t speak to its fealty to the original story, but I can say that going in blind, I enjoyed the movie.

In fact, having watched this film in 2023, I can say that by today’s standards, it was downright miraculous; the acting was solid, the plot was original and engaging, there were zero woke tropes (no bumbling straight white male imbeciles needing to be corralled by more ‘diverse’ cast members, no ‘strong independent women’ / depthless shell of a character whose only trait is a bad attitude and that she’s a she). Even more astonishing was the fact that there were no transvestites nor evident trope inclusions in the story arch to ‘appeal to modern audiences’.

I’d recommend this movie.

Pretty Good

So I didn't notice any woke but apparently if you read the books there is a gender swapped important character. There is a lot of diversity in the cast but it deals with different planets and different races so It didn't feel forced at all. This is a decent Sci-Fi film. Good fx and acting. Great cinematography. This is not really an action film though there are some good action scenes. It will seem a little slow if that's what your looking for.

Not woke

At least no indoctrination or elements. Just an overly diverse cast, especially when compared to the 80s version. Seems to be more and more typical with Hollywood. Token black characters left and right. At least Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and Jason Momoa are well known actors and draws. You can't say the same about the rest which are purely DIE hires.

Gender swap

In the novel, Liet Kynes is a half-Fremen man with sandy hair. In the movie, this role is played by a black woman. So it's a gender swap and apparently race swap too.

Additionally, the manner of Kynes' death is changed. Can't have a black woman tortured to death, so instead she goes out a hero, taking down with her some of the most bad ass warriors in the galaxy.

Lynch's 80's version of Dune is a masterpiece. This new one is pretty slow and not as good. Not awful, though.

Race & gender swap

Overall boring movie.
The dialogues feel empty and not at all on the same level as the visuals or soundtrack.
The old 1980s movie was much better
