Not too woke

Although a movie with a strong theme of
race relations, the film itself isn’t exactly “woke.” There’s only as much Evil Whitey in the film as might be expected. All black characters are inevitably holier-than-thou, but still that’s still within the realm of expectation. And how can one make a film about Elvis without angelic black people and evil evil white people? It’s par for the course. In that sense, it’s only mildly, mildly woke.

White man bad, black man good.

White man bad, black man good. BB King making comments about Elvis preference over Little Richard if he sang a song. Comments about Elvis not being arrested for his behavior, but if the black man walked across the street he would be arrested. They left out the left was pro segregation when showing the scene concerning it. On the film itself… Questionable accuracy. Even the lewd acts were overdone.

Woke

Watched about 30 minutes and said enough. Turned it off. Tired of being lectured, just want to be entertained.

Know your history

Apparently the reviewer “Bonbon” doesn’t know about history.. this film is supposed to reflect Elvis’s life in sequence.. the film shows Elvis as a boy who finds a black church and is drawn to the singing and becomes “consumed” by it. If Bonbon wasn’t just a racist, he would know in interviews Elvis specifically details discovering the black church and how it contributed to his love for singing.. he was also raised in black neighborhood and maintained his early friendship with his black friends. Yes there is race involved, but in the 1960s Deep South.. racial tensions were a very real thing. Know the difference between something being woke and historical… The wokeness of racism in film comes about when filmmakers manufacture it where it doesn’t exist, or help move the narrative forward. Elvis was in trouble with the law due to his use of, what was referred to as, “negro rhythms” and grew up in black projects and has said it heavily influenced him..
