"The whole world's on fire, isn't it?"
"The Last of the Mohicans" is set during an intriguing period of Colonial America, amid the war between England and France, with Native American tribes taking sides. It's an enjoyable movie, but the shallow romance feels off. Thankfully, there's nothing woke about it.
Women are portrayed as damsels in distress. One woman does fire a couple of shots, but nothing unrealistic. The romance is established with a few seconds of intense eye contact and a kiss, and then suddenly, the couple is bonded for life, with the man willing to die for her. There's a moment where she is higher than him during the kiss, suggesting he might be lifting her up for more than a kiss.
The Natives are not depicted as new age hippies like in newer films. They are shown as savages who fight among different tribes, yet are partially integrated and allied with the French or English.
The uniforms and war scenes vividly bring this period to life. The style of warfare must have seemed alien to the Natives, even those who grew up around it. You'd think the English would have learned from their conflicts with the Natives how to handle guerilla warfare, but no. Two decades after the events in the film, the English get wrecked by the Colonials in the American Revolution.
This is a no-nonsense film where women are women and Injuns are Injuns. Watch it and embark on a remarkable history-based journey.
