Primer

The film commences with a seemingly mundane dinner party, yet subtle inconsistencies already suggest something is... off. Nothing woke.

As a low budget indie film, it is exempt from Hollywood's DIE requirements. Four white, heterosexual couples and nothing else... that has to be a world record for recent cinema!

Most of the dialog was ad-libbed, and none of the actors are big names, which is pretty amazing. The improvisational nature of the dialogue contributes to the film’s authenticity, though there are moments where the delivery falters, momentarily breaking the spell of immersion. Likewise, there are amateurish errors in the cinematography that one must overlook.

In both its low budget and plot, Coherence reminds me of Primer. Coherence is not about time travel, but like Primer you will need to watch it more than once and consult the Internet to really understand it.

Early in the film, I felt one of the characters was too quick to dial his reaction up to 11, but I've only seen it once, and by the end I concluded this character knew much more early in the film than I had realized. I'm already looking forward to watching this film again... when my wife is not around... because she hated it.

This intricate film serves as a testament to the creative potential unleashed when storytelling is unhindered by wokeness.
