A simple fun movie.

This movie isn’t a classic, nor is it a thespian masterpiece, but it’s a good old-fashioned film designed to entertain rather than lecture its audience on the politics of the day.

In addition to its simple but enjoyable story, it’s a home run for a good trip to the theatres because it features a male lead who is portrayed as the hero; a space ship pilot from an ancient space faring civilization crash lands on earth 65 million years ago and he must struggle to survive its harsh environment.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

He’s a capable and tough - though tormented - man who has to struggle to survive as he also does his best to save the only other person who survived the ship’s crash landing, a little girl.

The film highlights the value of old fashioned male stoicism as it shows the protagonist overcome his inner tribulations as he is inspired to fight on despite his feelings of personal loss, all to save an otherwise helpless little girl whose life is in his hands; putting away his own inner torment is made possible by the innocent affections and vulnerability of his defacto ward, the little girl who effectively takes the place of his deceased daughter.

The pair struggle on through a hostile environment filled with dinosaurs to reach an escape craft before time runs out. The asteroid that killed the dinosaurs is inbound, and they have to race against the clock to avoid annihilation.

Average Sci-Fi Drama

Gets a 1 woke for the mixed race couple. Acting is good, VFX are generally good though there are some average moments. Overall not bad but somehow just really boring. This is more of a survival drama than it is an action creature movie. The action scenes are just so bland and boring and not really all that well filmed. It's not a bad 90 minutes just don't expect an action filled movie.

Dim witted and frustrating

The first two minutes of the movie were enough to make an assessment, but we stuck it out through the whole miserable thing. In those two minutes you will be introduced to a galaxy faring race in a ship without the ability to detect asteroids.... Facepalm. However, they can detect those same asteroids from a pocket device on the planets surface. Double facepalm.

The rest of the movie is like watching a list of over used movie tropes just jammed together in no logical order. Strong man, recalcitrant child grow together through shared hardships. There is the disobey scene, the save big man scene, save child scene, the we are bonding now scene, the same thing we have all seen a hundred times ad nauseum. Also, there is virtually NO character development. My daughter and I could have cared less if either one or both of them died because we had zero connection to them. I guess the movie couldn't bother with that.

The CGI was pretty good. The stage props were bad. Bad rocks, bad vegetation, bad control of time of day. In a single scene with the character running through the woods for a couple minutes the time of day went from pitch black, to dawn, to daylight. Talk about ripping you right out of the scene. Facepalm.

There are two woke aspects to this movie. First, over representation of minorities. Racial quotas are racist and woke. Second, the unrealistic girl super power to save the day.

Just watch a different movie.

Simplistic

All movies in our soon-to-be Idiocracy will be like 65. It is childish and predictable.

Woke elements are minor. There is an interracial couple (only offensive because straight white couples are so rare in movies) and a little girl that saves our hero not once but twice. Actors are 2 whites, 1 Jewish-Puerto Rican, and 1 black, but I would not throw a flag for that, because it's such a small number, so would be unrepresentative no matter what.

Text explains at the start of the movie that this takes place long before humans, so these beings who look exactly like humans are not humans. Actually, Adam Driver (the pilot) and Adriana Greenblatt (the little girl) are about the most alien-looking actors in Hollywood, but if that was the goal then casting blew it with the wife and daughter.

Spoilers follow.

65 is a reference to 65 million years ago. So, that's why dinosaurs are running around on this planet. Well, except the dinosaur-killer asteroid was 66 million years ago, not sure why the difference. Anyway, I prefer to think that the large asteroid in 65 was not THE dinosaur killer asteroid but an earlier smaller one. Otherwise, the spaceship must have had a maximum improbability drive.

The start was a rip-off of Pitch Black. Way too similar. However, 65's use of the asteroids to both cripple the spaceship and later strike the planet makes more sense than in Pitch Black where apparently there is a synchronicity that causes spacecraft to get hit by asteroids and crash land on a planet just before a rarely occurring event.

If you really need a dinosaur fix, feel free to watch, but otherwise skip.
