Marketed as woke but surprisingly only about 5% woke.

There is outright misogyny in the writing for some of the other natives. Her line "Because you all think that I can't." In response to her being asked why she wants to hunt, could have been rewritten to get around that. This movie's other elements surprisingly lack woke elements accept for the small misogyny already mentioned.

Decent movie, awful lead

Prey is a movie trying to be a lot of things, a successful reboot of the franchise after some let downs, a "return to roots" sort of flick and one that tries to tread the lines of wokeness, but being a Disney property now... they just can't help themselves.

The main protagonist Naru (Amber Midthunder) is... tolerable at best. While they didn't go the Rey "Mary Sue" Skywalker route, she does have some way too modern sensibilities and in the final act she is far too capable to be believable.

Firstly, she is constantly shirking the roles of her tribe, she is backed up by her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers) who mainly defends her position within the tribe as sort of a tom boy try hard who REALLY wants to be a hunter (and shes VERY angsty about it). Taabe is actually a very well rounded character, and honestly, if he were the protagonist and the roles were reversed in this film, it would be far better off.

The real issue is the way they all speak to each other, it's clear the casting is an attempt to have more diversity, but I appreciated the consistency of indigenous characters. The issue here is this, they want to make these characters relatable to modern indigenous people, so they all talk that way, they use a very modern vernacular and vocabulary that is just ridiculously out of place for the time period this film is set in.

Another issue, and this is a bit nitpicky I suppose, but there is an issue with the way Naru herself looks... for someone who claims to be a capable hunter, and who practices it, despite everyone else asking her not to and directly inconveniencing her tribe most times, for all of that, she still looks soft and way too out of shape. The actress herself is "thicc" to say the least, and has WAY too much meat on her to be a real warrior in a tribe struggling to survive in the 1700s. It's most evident in the scene where she is running from the Predator and you can see how really un-atheletic she is.

Finally, in the final act, the engagement between her and the predator and the inevitable conclusion is extremely tedious and takes some serious suspension of disbelief to make your way through it. There are so many inexplicable decisions made by the Predator and others and so much plot armor for Naru that it's extremely underwhelming.

Overall the movie is entertaining, it has some great acting (by supporting actors) and despite the efforts to ride the line in terms of wokeness.... they couldn't help themselves but include it.

You might enjoy it, you might not, depends on your ability to suspend your disbelief and look past the angsty thicc proud indigenous woman schtick and just absorb the gory action and violence.

I think there should be a separate rating:
How much effort do the progs put into disguising their woke efforts?
The woke is strong in making the males (everybody but the girl and her Mom) in the film look like idiots. How DARE they not let her hunt! She's going to go full Lara Croft/ Joan-of- Arc/ Wonder Woman/ Captain Marvel/Trinity on your azz!

I did smile a bit when her 90 lbs of fury went all John Wick/Equalizer on the French trappers. Woke mulligan?

I watched the entire movie to see the modern effects of the predator, as I'm a fan from way-back original days (I'm old). #GETTODACHOPPER!

What's funny, is that an 8' space hunter is just as probable as an 18th century tomboy Native girl being the greatest huntress in the region and with her wits and cunning defeat said Predator, the French, and every wild animal Hollywoke can conjure.

Didn't finish movie

Didn't see trailers, so i didn't know what to expect, but hoped to be entertained by the scenes of a Predator just fucking people up. However, I will never know if that was the case: I noped the fuck out when I heard her response to "Why do you want to hunt" - "Because you'll think I can't"...... NOPE. Alt-F4. Peace.

Surprisingly a cool Predator prequel

If they cld remove the post-modern woke elements, then Prey would have been a worthy Predator movie that was probably on par with or better than Predator 2.

Pros: Great story, entertaining fight sequences and cool Predator design. I love the Native American angle.

Cons: All the natives are speaking with modern American English and sensibilities. Woke view of native american social hierarchy. All whites are super evil, incompetent and cruel. Anachronistic girl power element, though not as bad as Rey.

I’d watch it if you are a Predator fan, it’s miles better than the last two Predator movies, including AVPs.

Woke Version of Predator

Typical anti-male feminism. The female lead is highly intelligent, strong and capable. All the male hunters are idiots. The French male trappers are depicted as vile and detestable while the natives are good and virtuous. Small female lead fights multiple large male trappers in hand to hand combat with no problem. Also manages to fight and win one on one against the predator while all the males were slaughtered while trying. The scenes of her bouncing of trees and logs flying through the air in modern parkour while none of the male characters use it is just stupid. The innovation of tying a rope around around her hatchet to retrieve it and just instantly being perfect at it is ridiculous. The female leads acting is also horrible and not believable as a native American in the 1700s. Mannerisms and speech are all wrong and she just comes of as a modern actor trying to play a part. It's really too bad because the rest of the cast are good, the story is an interesting take on the Predator and this could of been good. Despite the wokenes if your a predator fan it is still worth a watch if you can look past the problems.

Not too woke

Comes off a bit forced strong independent woman, but not too over the top by Hollywood standards. Other than that, it wasn't woke. Decent prequel.

Didn't Finish - Too Woke for me

The girl in this is completely unbelievable. She's borderline a 'Mary-Sue' character. I'm suppose to believe this 80lb girl and her dog are gonna do something Arny and bunch of soldiers could barley do!?

I really wanted to give this movie a try but I just couldn't even get 20mins in, I turned it off at dialog; Mom: "Why do you want to hunt" - Girl: "Because you all think I can't" and just how this lead comes off at all times, I felt it unbelievable for the time period.

There's a Medieval Fan made Film that does a better job with the Predator during a time with no guns than this. Go watch that instead.
