"Hell on Wheels" is a gritty (muddy?) Western drama set during the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad after the Civil War, focusing on a former Confederate soldier. The acting is compelling, including Colm Meaney as a robber baron train magnate. It's just a whole lot of fun.
There is an interracial couple consisting of a black male former slave and white female former prostitute (who was also a former slave of Native Americans). This would have been highly unusual and socially controversial for the time, but the show treats it as such. Several female characters are strong-willed, but I would not wish otherwise. Nothing feels like an agenda here, just excellent writing.
With its high production values, gripping acting, and first rate writing you will feel transported back to 19th-century America. Saddle up!
