Colony

In the near future a family must make difficult decisions as they balance staying together with trying to survive. They live in Los Angeles, which has been occupied by a force of outside intruders. While some people have chosen to collaborate with the authorities and benefit from the new order, others have rebelled — and suffer the consequences.

Such a shame it was cancelled after season 3.

This show was engaging and well acted. A truly gripping series set in a near-future dystopia brought about by an alien occupation, Colony was just hitting its heights when they pulled the plug.

Everything is not as it seems

Mild spoilers up to S02E01. Before the Arrival, an American CIA-like front organization named the Center for Global Advancement uses its men-in-black to blackmail people to agree to be leaders in the new global government (headquartered in Davos, Switzerland). This New World Order would occur after the upcoming worldwide coup when the "aliens" arrive. The "aliens" assume control via this "Vichy" collaborator government.

Society goes downhill after the coup, with a negative feedback loop. It is an Ouroboras, where confining populations into walled colonies results in resource problems, resulting in harsher government control and "deportations" to the Factory and later "Portland", further reducing resources... Yet, somehow there is always "bacon" for the elites. ("Soylent Green is people!")

And guess who is leader of the "Resistance"? That's right, an "ex" CIA man, who orders the assassination of another resistance cell for "reasons". A CIA woman is also on the other side, as head of police in the LA Bloc. Wake up viewers: the CIA took down the government with an EMP and a coup and subsequently controls both the government and the (controlled opposition) resistance!

Although alone in my sentiment, I'm quite sure the aliens are fictional within the show, but there is a conspiracy within the show to make them appear real to the population, and then a conspiracy by the writers to also fool the viewer. Remember that the show is set in our near future, when our own technology will likely achieve that which we see in the show. And no, Virginia, the Factory is not on the Moon.

Basically, this show was a strong warning about Globalism, written at a time slightly before this had entered the public dialog.
