Andre Santamaria's Reviews
A nice movie that serves to rebuke elements of our ageist throwaway culture.
Yes, there are mild elements of wokeness to this film. Mostly what you’d expect of a cast of characters set in New York, in a female-run tech startup.
But, despite those relatively subtle woke notes, this film is an endearing story which (maybe unintentionally) serves to demonstrate the value of traditional masculinity in the form of Robert De Niro’s character, who is a retired old-school businessman whose steady demeanour and wisdom bolster Anne Hathaway’s character as he guides and surreptitiously mentors her into becoming a more fulfilled and quietly confident version of herself. In addition to the lead man being cast as a quiet, competent, and steady figure, this film also shows the value of age and wisdom, in a culture which far too often spurns the old and glorifies the young.

Follow up review…
Original:
(Only a few episode in) But I don’t get the wokeness rating on this one. I haven’t seen much wokeness, and I find it to be a funny show so far. It’s a comedy after all, so it’s hardly a shock that humorous deprecation plays a role. Does it play off the stereotypes often associated with middle American football fans? Yes. But it also portrays the protagonist (who is the object of the stereotype-based deprecation) as a kind and able man.
Follow up:
It does have left leaning takes on politics disguised as jokes. But it seems downright quaint compared to the usual drag-queen gender bending ‘diversity’ obsessed nonsense we’re inundated with these days. Nevertheless, it is politically tilted left.

Predictable, not very funny, and full of trite socialist / leftist anti rich people tropes.
This show is a collection of anti male, anti white, and anti rich throwaway lines masquerading as jokes. It almost reminds me of one of those bland formulaic bits of politically correct / diverse ‘comedy’ from the early to mid 2000s that tries to impart some half baked pseudo philosophical message (here it’s mainly that rich = bad); it hits all the most in vogue leftist notes, it checks all the requisite diverse boxes, and it bashes all the right groups. It’s a bad show, and I do not recommend it.

Could’ve been better.
A (strong independent) woman is kidnapped and her husband and brother ineffectually attempt to rescue her. They fail multiple times, somehow snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Then, they succeed and the rescuee is ungrateful and leaves her husband for some reason. Okay action scenes, but bits of subtextual snarky anti American dialogue and of course a highly dislikable protagonist, make this show hard to enjoy.

Good war movie.
This was a woke-free dramatization of a World War Two tank crew and their incredible battles against the Nazis. It’s dark and intense, but is a good movie if you’re into war movies.

Woke but still enjoyable.
Matt Damon’s character is a poor guy in a dystopian near-to-mid-future California. He is injured at work and faces his impending death by trying to fight against his society’s unjust ruling class, who live on a pristine space station.
Spoilers ahead:
The acting is good, and the story is too, but the film is essentially a vehicle to convey the writer or director’s politics as they relate to immigration in the USA. The space station is populated by capitalists who are portrayed as rich and heartless, and of course they exclude the third world earth people from their station, going so far as to shoot down ships with illegal immigrants on them.
Damon’s character infiltrates the station and changes it’s computer system to classify everyone as a ‘citizen’ effectively disabling the station’s defensive systems by preventing them from firing on the poor as they flood onto the station, inequality solved, right?!
I’d love to see the scene they left out though; as soon as the third world types on the earth take over the station, it would surely turn into the same dump they created on Earth!
Though I was rooting for the ‘bad guys’, I enjoyed the movie. It’s still worth a watch in my view.

An interesting premise poorly executed.
Not worth your time.

Truly horrible.
This show is everything you hate about the walking dead without the few remaining characters that caused loyal fans of seasons 1-3 of the walking dead to stick around too long. It’s truly awful.

Seasons 1-3 were fantastic. Skip the rest.
What started as a must-watch show, devolved sometime in season 4 to become a complete hodgepodge of woke garbage. It’s almost criminal - the show was brilliant and truly gripping until that point.

Such a shame it was cancelled after season 3.
This show was engaging and well acted. A truly gripping series set in a near-future dystopia brought about by an alien occupation, Colony was just hitting its heights when they pulled the plug.
