Prescient, as they say, but a bit long and melancholy
It's hard to tell if Romy Schneider was past her prime in Death Watch or not since I adore her and she holds up well in this film. And the film has a pretty fine cast all around, it's just that the story and, I think, character development could have been so much more.
Compared to modern films, Death Watch is heads and tails above anything today, but it really is depressing. These characters have layers, for sure, but they're overshadowed by the dreary atmosphere and oftentimes off-putting story.
Of course, there's nothing woke at all in this film, so I recommend watching it on an early Saturday morning, maybe if you wake too early with a minor hangover. It's that kind of film to watch.
