It works if you fast forward the gay bits.

The story is rather unique: a mind-bending, chilling ghost story of sorts set in Elizabethan Period, on the ocean. Unfortunately most seems to be filmed at night, so it's hard to see what's going on. But the characters are generally compelling and the story is curious enough to want to keep watching. The choice of music is very strange considering it's a period piece, but it serves to keep the audience at an objective distance, the way a Brechtian director might do.

The woke comes from a gay gay gay main character and his arc. There is no sex in the series generally, but there is LOTS of deep kissing and petting sensuality between the only two gay characters.
None from any of the other characters.

So in order to watch this series, I had to constantly fast forward and skip the gay sex romps. The story flows just as fine without them, so you're not missing anything in doing so.

Besides the heavy gay, the occasional feminist rant from the madame aboard gets annoying, but her character is minor, so it's forgettable enough.
There are no political rants, no forced diversity casting, no emasculation. The diversity is there, but in a logical international way. I have no idea what the producers meant by sticking in the gay characters - maybe it was a Netflix checkbox to be filled, since the story is better without them.

Disgusting and graphic gay sex included

From the creators of Dark- one of the best pieces of television ever made, will this show live up to it? Well… not really. Don’t get me wrong, the writing is really good, the CGI is groundbreaking (literally, as it was extremely expensive to make) the storytelling was great and the cast was great- even using an actor from Dark! The problem is that it ends on a cliffhanger and there is no Season 2 in sight. The other problem is that there is some of the most graphic, disgusting gay sex scenes that truly make one feel uncomfortable and ill that I have ever seen in television. If you skip past those scenes the rest is great. One other woke thing is that of course there is a stereotypical more-capable black dude put in to steal someone’s (a wimpy white-cuck’s) wife.
