Starts off groundbreaking but later weakens its grip

Supernatural begins in a way that would be groundbreaking today. It has 2 white heterosexual young brothers with unabashed masculinity born into a family legacy of fighting the supernatural and travel the country doing so. They live the life of warriors and along the way flirt with romance, tragedy, humor and extreme PTSD..

The show always had a diversity of characters (minorities, women, gays) but it felt very natural in the first 3rd to 2/3rds of the show.
After that bad writing and a caving to certain niche fans begin to seep in. There was even a demand to throw characterization out the window and make one of the brothers turn gay. Fortunately the creators didn't cave to that one but threw them a bone by making an angel gay and secretly pining for the brother.

They also begin to cave to the notion that masculinity and toxic masculinity are the same thing and started tossing in young female fighters in an unnatural way.
They also steered away from the brothers and any romantic entanglements because some young fans got jealous and hated on the actresses.
The writing became more and more simplestic and all mystery was eliminated, villians neutered and characters more and more behaving out of character.

These different aspects they suddenly felt compelled to include contributed to the downward spiral of the writing. And then again, 15 years is a long time. Almost a lifetime from young men to knocking on middle age.

Everyone has different opinions but I found it underrated for s2-5. It became a prime show during these years with its blend of tragedy and humor and outstanding characterization . Season 1 was set up.
Season 6 through maybe 12 was still sometimes brilliant but other times
mediocre and tedious.
Seasons 13-15 are nearly unwatchable for me. No magic exists any longer.

Tragic and Comedic with Universal themes

As long as you know going in that the chosen one, the slayer, is going to always be a young female cursed (or blessed) with super human powers to hunt the supernatural monsters of the world then know this show is otherwise completely devoid of wokeness. It's awake but never woke.

If you can accept this premise and make it through it's short lukewarm 1st season you will be blessed with one of the best ever written shows on television. It combines the comedic and the tragic with real heart and nearly every episode becomes metaphoric to real life. The characters are keenly drawn with chemistry to spare and has consistantly snappy dialogue. You'll feel you know these people.
The later seasons from s4 on are edgier, darker and more adult and I, as an adult, preferred these although some prefer the earlier more lighthearted s 1-3.

Also later in the series one of the main characters does come out as gay. This is the alarm, I guess, for some people. But it's so subtle in its handling that it feels more natural then current media plays it....So what? Life goes on, right?. There's monsters to kill in this world and it's not us

Consistently entertaining

This film is unusual (in our current landscape) in its ability to remain entertaining to the end. It's kind of a mystery, thriller suspense with a splash of film noir, and while it may not win any awards, it manages to keep the audience invested without any agenda.
Well acted and no wokeness in sight.

Benicio del Toro is fantastic.

It's hard to say...

...how woke this show is because for a show that started with such edgy promise I do think it's safe to say that it became a mocking parody of itself.

It was always smitten with its relentless gratuitous nudity and endless grinding but it was only after the first 2 or 3 seasons that it dissolved into a plotless wonder with everybody doing everybody and no humans left in sight.

It completely lost its edge when every character became either a fairy or a werewolf or a vampire...or something other than human.. The only stakes left were who was going to screw who.
Everyone stayed naked so frequently that it got exciting to see them put their clothes on. ...You wondered if some direction to the plot might be brewing..

What a mess it became that even the nudity got boring.
Woke? Who knows. I stopped watching when it put me to sleep.

Awake without being woke

This film was made in the early 60's and sort of ahead of its time. It depicts an educated black man and a blind abused and neglected white girl that form a bond. If anything it brings attention to the days before DFAC and how economic status put many abused children in the shadows.. There was nobody to care.

The girls family is poor white trash, ignorant and prejudice, but it doesn't depict all white people as such. The black man, played by the wonderful Sidney Poitier, has a brother that is a Doctor and suspicious of white people. Probably rightfully so in this time.

This film poignantly depicts the relationship between 2 people where race and politics are irrelevant. There is a hint of romantic feelings (Selena is 18 ) but it focuses more on Gordons concern for her well being and helping her get a chance at a better life.
The performances are amazing and touching and Shelly Winters creates one of the most loathsome mothers ever.
I think this film depicts something relevant without a negative woke agenda..These were days when prejudices were real and it conveys it with more heart and subtlety than current times.
