Timothy Wightman's Reviews
Don't dwell on aspects of this movie you can argue are woke
This movie is about family family family. HETEROSEXUAL FAMILIES. Some of the strongest men characters and themes of fathers being indispensable that I've ever seen in a movie. But I'm supposed to care that not enough bad guys were non-white? Stop looking for things to offend you! The enemy here is the all powerful govt and the good guys here are the strong family unit. Don't shy away from this movie if you're conservative.

This is a terrific movie. It deftly handles the relationship between the Jonathan Majors character and his fellow pilots. It's a true brotherhood and everyone has each other's backs. Yes the movie goes out of its way to illustrate the pains the Majors character has endured as a black aviator in 1950. But whereas similar movies use a sledgehammer to detail such injustices, Devotion balances these instances by clearly showing Majors' affection and respect for his white counterparts. It goes a long way towards making you care about Majors and the other characters and their plight.

I saw that another rater called this super woke. That's disappointing because it's not even a little woke. Interracial couples? Yeah, so. Are they all male/female? Yes! And the main male/female relationship at the movie's core is rock solid with the two leads 100% dedicated to family. Traditional morality is present throughout. This is a perfectly acceptable movie to throw on for the kids.

Wonderful
I mean... the freewheeling mom actually encourages her young woman daughter to romantically pursue the young man. When's the last time you saw that in a movie? Zero LGBTQ themes. The only thing that can be construed as woke is the film makers' not so subtle belief that the flawed black female character was justified in her flaws because of society. But what are you gonna do? We can't win em all.

Great movie! Maybe a touch of wokeness but nothing to make me mad
No gayness, had favorably portrayed male characters. The female lead was tough but feminine. And she connected with the main guy. There was even a black character and I was surprised when they didn't keep him alive simply to avoid being called racists. The only thing that even could've been considered woke-ish was a monster hunter character whose gender was hard to know--at least until she uttered her one line. Great movie! Super refreshing to have another marvel movie with no wokeness. Keep an eye on this director!
