Galaxy Quest

A comedy of galactic proportions.

For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA protector - "Commander Peter Quincy Taggart", "Lt. Tawny Madison and "Dr.Lazarus" - set off on a thrilling and often dangerous mission in space...and then their series was cancelled! Now, twenty years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest television transmissions for "historical documents" and beam up the crew of has-been actors to save the universe. With no script, no director and no clue, the actors must turn in the performances of their lives.

Never give up!

"Galaxy Quest" was my first DVD, and I grew to love this movie. It plays like a symphony, with the great writing flowing scene to scene, creating an insane, epic story.

The story is written for fans of "Star Trek". Later, "The Orville" muscled into this territory, bringing another comedy based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (TNG). Nevertheless, "Galaxy Quest" still serves its purpose and has grown to have its own fanbase.

The only thing that some might perceive as woke is Sigourney Weaver's character complaining about the TV Guide interview being about her boobs. Sigourney's character, Gwen DeMarco, is probably a reference to Marina Sirtis, who played Deanna Troi, aka "Counselor Cleavage", on TNG. Marina has complained about Deanna's initially superficial, sexy role. Both Deanna and Gwen/Tawney speak stupid lines to relay already known information. So, Sigourney seems to play Marina, a person who is very, very woke. Marina moved out of the US, explaining, "January 6 did it for me. When we had an insurrection in Washington, a bunch of lunatics trying to overturn the election." FFS. The movie itself is not woke, though.

I do see some similarity to the current situation, though, post assassination attempt. "Never give up! Never surrender!" sounds like something President Trump might say. Persevering over evil by being naively persistent... that is the essence of President Trump and Commander Taggart.

If you love "Star Trek", you will love "Galaxy Quest". Also check out the documentary, "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary".
