Great book, good movie.
The woke is minimal. Climate change is presumptive, but without any agenda or major concern in the story. This is about a clear and present threat to the solar system. There's enough in the trailers about the alien, Rocky, that it's not a spoiler to mention him. In a nutshell, Grace is sent on a one-way mission to a star that may provide a solution to the threat. He meets up with Rocky, who is basically doing the same thing from his star system.
How does the movie compare to the book?...
There are basically two ways to portray a book in movies: Make a series, such as Queen's Gambit, Reacher, Pride and Prejudice, etc., or re-write the story in a screenplay that will fit into a single movie, like this one. They did a great job with that in my opinion. They left a lot out of the story and added what was necessary to rebuild continuity. As usual, the book was better, but the movie is definitely worth the watch. I recommend both.
I just realized that the paragraph I just wrote could also describe The Martian, which was also written by Andy Weir.

Interstellar wannabe, Amazon propaganda
Interstellar wannabe, delivery medium for Amazon’s propaganda. Save yourself from the insult to your time, protect children from its messaging.
Power positions:
- Top power position occupied by girlboss female
- Black security guard with decision-making and financial authority over protagonist
- White male protagonist lowest in hierarchy; not taken much seriously by a forcedly diverse cast of scientists; more or less a clown
Emasculated white male protagonist:
- Clumsy
- Unsuccessful career
- Cowardly
- SPOILER: The morality, bravery, and sacrifice the white male protagonist had shown during the entire movie so far was undermined in the last act and he was portrayed as a coward in a flashback
Gender politics:
- Grace: The white male protagonist is referred by this feminine (last-) name throughout the entire movie, despite being certainly in very friendly terms/first-name basis with the main interaction partner. The symbolism of the name (Grace, Mary) could have been conveyed without the continuously forced usage.
- They/Them pronoun usage (01:24:21)
- SPOILER: Giving the male name “Adrian” to an alien’s partner (01:33:28), despite the alien having (chosen) a male voice earlier. Effectively making the alien the gay character in the movie.
Environmentalist messaging:
- End of the world coming in 30+ years due to climate change is the main premise of the movie

Great movie!
What can you say about this film?
Look, if you grab a magnifying glass and start dissecting it like some sad little nerd, you’ll probably find some square rock with the corners conveniently rounded off so nobody gets poked. There’s always something, isn’t there?
But anyway…
It was bloody entertaining. I walked out of the cinema proper buzzing, smiling like a fool, feeling like I’d just watched a proper movie from the ‘90s or early 2000s. You know… when they still made them good.

A Solar Eclipse of Common Sense: Hollywood's Latest Propaganda Piece
Hollywood's latest sci-fi disaster proves that common sense is being consumed faster than our sun. Humanity's survival is entrusted to a busted-looking redhead, with a character lineup that's pure diversity quota: a competent black security guard, a clumsy white scientist who's last to arrive, and a DEI panel that does nothing until the token white male shows up. The film transparently compensates for casting Ryan Gosling by cramming in every anti-white trope possible.
This isn't filmmaking—it's propaganda. Science takes a backseat to sermonizing, with characters reduced to demographic checkboxes and narrative sacrificed for ideological purity. The result is an intellectually dishonest lecture disguised as entertainment that treats its audience like they need remedial social justice training rather than a good story.

I originally read the book back when it came out so it's been a while but from what I can remember this is incredibly close to the book. Great acting and writing, the FX are excellent and the humor is great. The book is fairly big and this sometimes feels a little condensed but at 2.5 hours it's already pretty long. Despite the runtime it never gets boring. There seems to be a divide here on whether or not it's woke so here's my response to some of the complaints. There is no climate change ever mentioned once anywhere in the movie. It is an invasive alien organism destroying the sun. That's it. The diversity in the panel is because it's a global initiative, this is not an America saving the world. This is on a global scale with many governments. Of course there will be
diversity, why would there not. The female lead is not a girlboss in any way. She's quirky and awkward, not nasty, vile, aggressive or violent. Referring to him by Grace. It's literally his last name, many people call each other by their last name. It's not unusual. The alien species is a non humanoid species that looks rock like. Gender is never once brought up. When asking about the mates name using 'their' one single time in this case is the same as saying he/she when asking someone their pets name or gender. If gender was brought up then I would agree it's woke. Adrian is male, Adrienne is female. The name is dual sex the same as
Nicky/Nikki or Danny/Dani or Terry/Teri. The only woke thing I saw was the black 'helper' Carl. He is not in the books and was added for the movie. This is clearly a DEI character put there for comedy and to help the white male lead. Not necessary and a woke point. I recommend both reading the book and watching the movie, they are both great.
