It’s woke, but..
..it’s kind of an equal opportunity offender. The woke elements aren’t done in a propaganda/agenda driven way, and it’s an original story. They aren’t hijacking some older, nostalgic intellectual property.
Yes there are woke elements, but everyone will be able to find something to hate and like through the 4 Season run. What I’m saying is, it’s worth watching. Don’t let the woke scare you off if psychological thriller type stories are your jam.

Story Surpasses Woke
Nine years later, I have to admit this does read a little woke. Back in 2016, I really didn’t notice (as much).
There’s a lot of forced diversity on screen and super female empowerment, but it reads well within the story. And that’s what’s most important: the story. What woke movies completely miss today is writing, acting, and producing good stories. The production always gets pushed to the side in favor of the aGEnDa!!111
So yes, it’s woke. But I didn’t care. It wasn’t heavy handed. And the story read well. If more productions endeavored to create original content versus rehashing and tearing down classic content, websites like this wouldn’t be necessary.

Bleh
This film must have had an extraordinarily low budget. I think there were only three set changes. The pacing was slow, the acting was a little cringe, and there were definite woke elements. Pretty bad overall production.
The quote the previous reviewer posted about “some old white guy” was really jarring and misplaced. But what was actually funny about the comment was the perpetrator ended up being “some old black guy,” but she never bothered to correct her statement. That would have been a really smart way to make a stab at the overarching narrative and hypocrisy. But no, she just let that comment sit. Typical.
And yes, we had an asexual protagonist that went out of his way to say so. Weird.
Dumb movie. I sensed they were going for an edgy indie style, and it felt forced and inauthentic. I watched the whole thing, and regret doing so. I really need to stop watching modern productions.

Dull
I lasted about two songs in and completely lost interest. Just boring. DEI yeah, but whatever. Missable. Forgettable. Like a bad broadway musical with CGI.

Watchable Woke
Great chase scene and Grandma from Farscape. Yeah it’s Woke, but I’m not mad at it.

Meh
I watched this movie two years ago and thought it was decent. I liked it a whole lot less the second time through this year (2024). The call backs to the old cast and films were what made this good the first time. It’s not worth sitting through a crappy film full of insufferable female characters, buffoonery male characters, dei and a gender neutral villain just to see the old guys one last time. I’ll take my Ghostbusters in the OG flavor, thanks.

The only fun part was watching the Anime Video Game Character try to exit the vault.
I agree with another reviewer. Everything was in place to make this totally woke, and you could sense Disney pulling the plug in the final seconds to release.
It’s sad that this is a celebratory moment in the current life arc of Disney.. that they didn’t go full woke. Yay?

Sorry. I quit watching after about 30 minutes. Just the typical white privilege, male hating blah blah blah. I feel like Hollywood made this movie in an attempt to overcome the NPC meme. Which is actually kind of funny. At least I didn’t pay to see it. Not exactly sure why I tried. Hard pass.

Good Representation of the Mansion..
..but a horrible story. Even with better acting, this plot was doomed. I liked Eddie Murphy’s better, if only slightly. Missing Jennifer Tilly as Leota as well. This is a missable flick. Not because it’s woke, only because it’s terrible. I only recommend this if you want to see a nice Mansion. Don’t invest the entire 2+ hours though.

Stunning Rollercoaster Ride
Phoenix did not appear topless in the “volleyball” scene. Equality? I think not. ;o)
Solid movie all around. I’m sorry I waited this long to see it. Zero woke. Fun callbacks to the original. Decent story. Worth wasting your 2 hours and 5 minutes of life.
