The character arc sucks…

Imagine the Lion King where Simba stays in the jungle and never returns because he learned to embrace his inner warthog.

That’s Turning Red.

Not as woke as people may think, but woke enough to merit calling it out.

There is a small amount of Wokeness in this movie. Giving the line "With great power comes great responsibility" to Aunt May because they didn't want to incorporate Uncle Ben in the MCU is something that many Spider-Man fans will notice.

A Line where Electro talks to Spider-Man and wishing Andrew Garfield Spider-Man was black, and Andrew Garfield apologizing for not being black comes off as white guilt, not as a joke as I have heard others suggest. The wishing blackness could be a shout out to Miles Morales, but in today's current IDP climate, it reeks of Identity Politics (IDP).

While there are these two elements, the movie does provide a sense of entertainment and emotional entertainment too.

Our generation's "Back to the Future"

I really enjoyed this film on a number of levels and could not detect any sort of wokeness. I highly recommend this movie, I think most people will thoroughly enjoy it.

--- SPOILERS BELOW ---

It had some great story elements that I think audiences will identify with. I particularly liked how the film portrays the image of fatherhood and motherhood. When that equal balance of a complete family is disrupted, how does that affect our upbringing? This film explores that "what if" when Adam gets a second chance to correct his own life.

It had elements that reminded me a lot of Back to the Future, many of the familiar tropes about interacting with your younger self and/or family and the dangers of affecting the timeline.

I struggled a bit with the villain in the film played by Catherine Keener. I was never really "afraid of her" as an viewer. I didn't get a sense that she ultimately became evil, more that she was just a lost soul, afraid. So It was hard to ever take her seriously as a threat.

Ryan Reynolds and Walker Scobell gave excellent performances as young & old Adam! I loved all the little details they added throughout, like how they even twirl their forks the same way when eating food.

I was moved by the scenes at the end of the film where Adam(s) got to reconnect and reconcile with their father. That moment made me tear up a bit.

In summary, I loved the movie. No Wokeness. 5/5 score from me!

Father of a 4y/o girl. Not as bad/woke as people make it out to be.

Trying to keep it spoiler free…
It was a decent movie, and actually had a good amount of laughs. Remember this movie is “PG” and not “G”.

What I thought people made a big deal about and I don’t they needed to-
1. The period scene- I laughed hard at it, all it was is that the parents were worried and thought their child was on her period. They didn’t even use the word “period”. They said things like “I didn’t think it would happen this soon”, and had a box of pads (set up for a joke later).
2. The kids not listening to the parents. Again, I think peoples problem with this was overblown. Mei had problems with her parents and it could have been fixed by different means but she wasn’t a perfect character. I’d compare it to the movie Luca, yes he didn’t listen to his parents, but he’s also a kid.
3. Some small misc. stuff- girl saying “stripper music”, the drawings of a guy holding her, other things I can’t remember didn’t seem woke, but definitely for older kids and why it’s in the PG compared to G.
4. The ritual scenes- it was fine. We’ve seen things like this like Mulan having a dragon.

What was woke-
1. The twerking Panda scene was a bit much and went on for too long.
2. The boy that was into the boy band. Could make people uncomfortable, but I remember lots of boys that age liking Backstreet Boys. The “I love you Aaron Z” from said boy, interpret that how you will.
3. The “My Panda my Choice” line. Did it make me uncomfortable, yes. Do I think it was a Planned Parenthood support thing, no. I just took it as a dumb line.
4. During the credits there are 2 lgbt rainbows with the boy bands logo on it. So it makes me interpret my 2nd point a little differently.

Conclusion-
It wasn’t the wokest thing, and I don’t feel the need to talk to my 4 y/o about it. The only thing I really would is the tweaking panda scene, but at the age she probably just thinks of it as a type of fart joke.
Do I think we would watch it again? Probably not, heck, if the movie got rid of the one twerking panda part and the lgbt logos at the end, I wouldn’t mind. It was a fun movie at times.

Great film overall, would recommend seeing

I enjoyed this film very much. The visual effects and story were 4/5.

There are a couple moments that led me to eye roll, namely when they end up in Ta Lo and their Aunty makes an anti-patriarchy statement about the women being treated equally and training right along with the men. It wasn't enough to ruin the film, but I didn't feel it was necessary to halt the plot just to make this point.

I'm glad that the father had a redeeming moment, rather than completely trashing his legacy.

In all, I would recommend this movie. It has a great plot and ties in nicely to the larger MCU.

The first few seasons do not contain any woke elements. However the later seasons fell into the All Cops Are Bad (ACAB) mentality, and the "Racist Cops" angles. Then also pushed race heavily and also oversaturated the show with female empowerment to the point it became obviously forced. If the show would have ended before the final 6th season, the show would have had a lower woke score.

Much like Eternals, this movie has a way of making the white characters (With exception of Batman and Alfred). morally inferior to the minority characters in the film. All the white characters are corrupt or morally compromised.

An important film

Given the recent events of Russia invading Ukraine, I sought to know more about the recent history of the nation. Several of my business contacts on LinkedIn recommended this film, and it was extremely enlightening!

It covers mostly the events of 2013-2014 leading up to Ukraine's revolution to overthrow their president, who was obviously in alignment with Vladimir Putin. The peaceful protests resulting in said president failing to sign Ukraine into the EU resulted in a major protest and uprising by the people.

The resulting reaction from their state government ultimately lead to an escalation of violence which resulted in innocent bloodshed and death. But the people never waivered, ultimately bringing about resignation of their president (who fled to Russia) and becoming a free nation.

It's easy to see why the resulting conflicts and turmoil since this uprising have percolated into a boil that has now ensnared their nation into war. This film will ultimately give insight into the plight of Ukraine and the utter passion it's people have for fighting to keep their freedom from oppressive regimes. I highly recommend seeing this film. I think it is one of the most important works we have to give context to the brutality we are seeing in Ukraine right now.

Great family film

Encanto is a great film that stresses the importance of togetherness and family. As usual, Disney does a great job of executing on splendid looking animations and the artistry here is beautiful.

The music is excellent quality, tunes are catchy and have a good message. Our kids enjoyed the movie and are already singing and dancing along.

From what we can tell, there do not appear to be any blatantly woke statements. While some audiences might be more or less sensitive to "woke levels," my observation is that there were not any "gut punch" type of moments.

Family Friendly

No wokeness as far as I could see. The story is about two boys that become friends. The one boy does run away from his family but they have a heart to heart in the end.

Family Friendly

I was so happy to not see any woke tones in this movie. There was no gay couple, no white people bad, and no stray away from family. This movie is about the importance of family and keeping the family together.

Classic!

This film is simply a classic.. made in a time before wokeness even existed.

Quite frankly, this is a movie that everyone should be required to watch.. Mostly so they'll get my jokes when I quote the movie.
