A little hard to watch but, worth it

The director seems to like the scene were there's a lot of emotion and everybody involved is trying to talk over everyone else. That happens at least 3 or 4 times every episode. that's why it's hard to watch. Building tension to the point of stressing the viewer is the norm. Other than that, the story unfolds a little too slow sometimes. The acting is tops. Every character is realistic and believable. The long story threads through the episodes with pleasant diversions into the individual characters with everything coming back together at just the right time. The language is continual f-bomb and violation of the Third Commandment. I'm expecting cooking schools to experience the kind of surge that the chess clubs got after Queen's Gambit. The culinary aspects appear to be genuine and interesting. I learned how to make a better omelet. I didn't expect a story about a Chicago restaurant to be this entertaining. SEASON TWO EDIT; About that slow story line, they found a lower gear. The entire season was one big buildup of tension that was never resolved. After a few episodes, the tension wasn't even building anymore. It was just held in anticipation of the big reveal that never came. I'll probably watch season 3 when it releases but not with the anticipation I had for starting season 2. I hope it gets back on track quickly.

Horrible Family Doing Stupid Things

Nothing really woke though there are a couple negative comments about capitalism and logging. The story isn't really original but the writing is horrible. The FX are actually pretty good and the creatures look good. The acting ranges from average to terrible but the real problem is the writing. So there is an island with dangerous elves who are kept behind an electric fence and the islanders keep them fed with cows and keep them a secret from the rest of the world. Why are they renting out houses to tourists? Why is a main road right by the fenced off compound? Why are they actually living there at all? Just leave. There is nothing keeping them there. Why is there no plan for if they get out and for defending themselves? There is literally one gun on the entire island (and yes you can have hunting rifles in Denmark). The biggest issue however is the absolutely horrible family of outsiders. They are truly awful people, especially the stupid annoying daughter. Never have I wanted to see a character die horribly so bad. Everything that happens to the islanders and everyone killed is a direct result of these entitled moronic douchebag people.

Surprisingly entertaining

Dahl's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has been rehashed in the movies a few times without being able to outdo Gene Wilder. Side note: the title of that movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was used instead of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because Quaker was sponsoring the movie in preparation for their new line of Chocolate products, which failed miserably because of poor quality. But, I digress... This movie started out as a musical and ended as a musical but, the part in between was a well done prequel to the story we're all familiar with. The acting was top notch. The CGI was state of the art and the screenplay was very well written. It was hard, at first, to accept Paul Atreides as Wonka but, his superb acting quickly settled that into place. It's worth the watch.

Bombs and guns and stuff

A silly, fun action movie with enough guns, bullets, bombs to make any liberal, granola-eating snowflake weep tears of agony.

Little less nutty than it thinks it is

Poor Things is nominated for an Oscar because it's an art or film student's love child and dream. Fortunately, as it moves forward, the story isn't all that complicated that us "regular" 9-to-5 kinds of people won't be able to understand it and, actually, it's quite good.

We could live without, say, 45 minutes of over the top sex scenes, women on women, on circus freaks, men playing dress-up and the kinky stuff added in order to offend, like, Jerry Falwell. I was not offended; I got tired of the film pandering to the cause so, for that, it gets a mild woke rating.

Childish

This film follows a "mad scientist" and his restoration project: a cyborg girl whom he treats like his daughter. She's like a rebellious teen but she's also a super tough robot who doesn't need (much) protection. I do not judge this as woke.

The action is really intense cartoony stuff that I don't care for. If that is your cup of tea, then drink up.

Wasted Opportunity

Large amount of DEI casting. All the men are either morons, betas or villains. All male police force is corrupt or bumbling idiots and the only ones who are competent and not corrupt are the 2 Asian females. Awkwafina as a cop is laughable. She is 5'1 beating up on large men 2-3 times her size. Head of the crime family is female. The acting is decent but the humor is just silly and terrible and never lands. The horror is also a miss. The splatter gore effects are pretty good and this could of been a good cult classic if they dropped the stupid humor and made it more serious horror.

Absolutely Woke, But Still Not Terrible

This is definitely woke. Right from the start Mario and Luigi are complete bumbling idiots and it never changes. Peach is a complete Mary Sue girl power badass. Luigi is now the damsel in distress and Peach runs the whole kingdom since the Toads made her their leader.....because reasons. The trials obstacle course Mario fails at repeatedly even with a power up and NEVER EVEN COMPLETES! Peach says she completed it right away but it's because she grew up there. Then why have the trials at all since all the Toads were born there and with that reasoning they should too. Her and Mario then go to leave on their quest and all the Toads ask who Mario is, her response, "he's not important" In fact the whole movie the only time Mario is not a failure is with a power up. Luigi spends the entire movie as a coward sniveling in the corner and only finally redeems himself when he and Mario defeat Bowser, but only with an invincibility power up, that Peach provides them with. Peach never needs a power up, for anything, she is perfect. This should have been called the Super Mary Sue Peach Movie. Despite all this it's still not the worst movie ever. The animation is very good and there is a lot of hidden easter eggs for long time Mario game players. Younger children will probably enjoy it more. Just be aware there is a heavy dose of girls better than boys messaging in this one.

Women bashing men

Sick of the women bashing men routine and of course it had to have a lesbian couple. At least they didn’t make the main character a wuss (so far). I’m surprised a white person was allowed to have a lead role in a new tv series. Will update if it gets more woke!

Dissenting opinion

I hibernated through the last couple of decades' glut of superhero films. Not my thing. However, I grew up watching Batman on TV, and when I was 10 years old I met Adam West at an autograph signing gig at a car dealership. Fallen superhero, indeed. And the Dark Knight is the #3 film of all-time on IMDB. So, I decided to give it a watch.

No spoilers follow.

It's certainly a beautifully shot film with great audio. However, it's too damn long. There, I said it. It's chaotic, in large part due to the Joker, but also due to the kitchen sink plot. This chaos makes the film drag on.

So, it's not a masterpiece and not deserving to outrank films like The Godfather Part II or LotR: The Return the King. But it's not woke and certainly worth a watch.

A good sequel

Not all films in the Predator franchise are worth viewing, but this one is. Nothing woke, though the one woman gets the most sympathetic character, and she's IDF to boot, LOL.

However, I didn't feel immersed, because the movie is trying too hard to be a movie. For example, there is a forced Apocalypse Now reference (look it up), and this bit of "meta" pulled me out of the moment.

Still, it's good popcorn entertainment. I give it a 3.5/5, rounding up to 4 due to no woke.
