All in good fun

"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" caught me off-guard, because it was listed in my app as a "crime drama", but it is hilarious, a dark comedy. Borderline woke elements are in jest.

The main character barbedly asks a racist cop about the "nigger torturing business", and he corrects, "It's 'persons-of-color' torturing business, these days." You have to admit that's funny. It is an insightful social commentary as well, with a racist insisting on politically correct speech, a sign of the times.

My only complaint is about the casting. The Australian accents of Abbie Cornish and Samara Weaving and the Westeros accent of Tyrion Lannister feel out of place in the small town setting. I have never once encountered an Aussie or Westerosi in rural America.

Overall, it is a delightful film. The Daily Wire style comedic bits about a racist character are a net plus.

Back to the Danger Zone

Wokeness: none.

Maverick is back in a movie that was actually made for men (and women who like men). It's been a long wait but we get all the gear, drama & action that might even surpass the 1st Top Gun. It does just the right amount of fan service while introducing the next generation of ace pilots.

Enjoy this oasis in a desert of feminized movies called the modern Hollywood film industry.

Woke tripe

This is a German soap opera. My wife watches it. I don't, though I suffer from secondhand exposure. It is bad and woke.

In recent years the couples in the show have been going more and more gay and interracial. At least one gay couple and one lesbian couple is now the rule. The studly Aryan blond male doctor was for years paired with an Amazonian Aryan blonde woman, but now he is paired with a black woman. Her black daughter is also paired with a white male.

One time there were three white hetero couples having a little get together, great, but actually one of men was Turkish and he had secretly impregnated one of the women in another of the couples. It is typical soap opera crap, but especially offensive with the Turk cucking a German.

The show has a 3.7/10 on IMDB, so it is truly deserving of a 0/5 here overall. How can I convince my wife not to watch this?

Some obvious wokeness, but not strong enough to avoid a good movie !

Very good movie overall, despite some obvious wokeness that won't overpower the quality of this work. Some great actor performances too.

Another Social Media Focused Bottom Feeder

Lesbian couple is the focus of the 'story' if you can call it that. Bad acting. Weird jarring editing and cuts. Random flashes of static images inserted into scenes. The whole cast of characters is internet famous annoying social media punchable idiots. Who do directors keep populating their movies with horrible unlikable characters? Once again this is NOT horror. It's a bunch of annoying characters talking, arguing and screaming at each other for 95 percent of the movie and then throw a little 'horror' in for the last 10 minutes. It's trash. There's
isn't even any good kills, scares or gore.

No Comedy, No Horror

This is another failed comedy/horror. The comedy isn't funny and there is no horror to be found. The acting is not so much bad as it is bad directing. This type of story has been done before many times and there is nothing original here. I was bored and ready to give up by the 30 minute mark. The fx are ok but it's not worth sitting through the entire movie for. There is some DEI over representation and it may get more woke further into the movie but I didn't care to waste time finding out.

Chick flick miniseries

"Drops of God" is a fantastical story set on a backdrop of wine tasting in France, Italy, and Japan. The dialog is in French, Italian, Japanese and English, so subtitles are a must. It's from Apple TV, but woke elements are minor.

The premise is that a woman must win a competition involving wine tasting in order to claim her father's inheritance. Previously, she had only tasted wine once in her life, while her adversary is a Japanese professional wine taster.

Fortunately, our Mary Sue has a superpower: a bloodhound-like sense of smell, drilled into her from a young age by her father's training. Unfortunately, alcohol is her kryptonite, provoking a pseudo-allergic life-threatening reaction. Of course, she finds a way to overcome that problem, or it would have been a very short miniseries.

This Mary Sue is nevertheless flawed: hyperemotional and girlish. (Or maybe she's just French?) Her adversary is a closed Japanese man. He is a male Mary Sue, if you like, also intensively trained in smell and taste senses, but later in life.

The plot lies in an "uncanny valley" between two extremes: realistic and absurd. The story unfolds believably in many ways, yet fantasy-like in others. I am left feeling uneasy.

Much of the film is based on science, albeit with artistic license. For example, our hero experiences synesthesia, often perceiving smell visually or as music. Her alcohol-induced nosebleeds arise from PTSD. I loved that the director showed her using a "memory palace", without dialog to explain the concept. Also, it is well known that exposure to at least one foreign language needs to happen before puberty for fluency in foreign languages, which makes semi-plausible this woman's "fluency" in scents due to childhood training.

On the woke front, I can overlook the Mary Sue trope, interracial sex (off-camera), a black female French doctor, the sadistic father, and the unflattering portrayal of husbands (one womanizer, one cuck, one wife-abandoner). To me, it feels like storytelling as opposed to virtue-signalling. Am I wrong?

The ending contrasts with the rest of the eight episodes. My wife loved it. I did not.

Overall, I recommend this mini-series. It is a "chick flick" that nevertheless can be enjoyable for men due to the interesting locations and oenology.

The Woke of the RoHERrim

I have seen many people claiming this is not woke, just because the main character is "not an insufferable girlboss", but you could not be more wrong.

Yes, the script cleverly tries to deceive you into thinking Héra is not bossy, nor too strong (more about this later). But of course they have to show you how smart she is, how wild, free, "untamable" and important she is, how she is the fastest rider, how talented for combat she was since childhood, how she can even trick a huge scary creature into killing another huge scary creature so easily, and how she can even befriend the Great Eagles at the very beginning of the movie. *Facepalm*

Everytime she says or suggests something and the dumb men won't listen to her, something bad has to happen, because she always HAS to be right.

Very early in the movie and also at the end, she makes it very clear that she needs no man and "she will marry no man", even if this should be one of her most important duties as a princess, since the story takes place in a medieval age. But the hell with that, because of course, she is a free and adventurous spirit that can just ditch her responsibilities if she wants to, because fighting patriarchy is what matters the most!

This is supposed to be the story of Helm Hammerhand, and yet, the lame excuse for his death in this movie is to save Héra, of course, stating she is "the true leader that Rohan needs" and she could even "rule the world", because... yes, there is no reason, she does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING during the story to deserve that praise. NOTHING.

Remember how I mentioned how Héra is not portrayed as "strong"? Of course that has to drastically change immediately at the final confrontation when she is fighting a MAN, easily stopping his arm, pushing it back, pinning him down to the ground and finally killing him BY HOLDING THE SMALLEST SHIELD EVER AGAINST HIS THROAT WITH ONE HAND!!! Are you f*cking kidding me?

In the original story, Fréaláf Hildeson (Helm Hammerhand's nephew) is the one slaying Wulf, saving Rohan and claiming the throne, but here, he is just like: "Oh, Héra, the throne rightfully belongs to you, but since you don't want it, I'll take it... but it should be you!". It's forced, lame, cringy, embarrassing.

If you see it just as a movie fan, it sucks; If you are a LOTR fan, it sucks three times more; If you are a Tolkien fan and know the original story, though... It's an abomination. Just do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Pleasant curio

This short-lived series was an attempt to bring the Vampire The Masquerade RPG to the telly, so a different, yet highly syncretic take on the vampire mythos.

This one is not teenage girl heart-throb, angsty disco sucker, and no effete Cruise & Pitt. Although all three could be Clan Toreador.

The main focus here is the Prince of San Francisco, who is basically an arbiter between the clans, as no older, more powerful kindred wants the hassle of the charge, and his efforts to uphold the Masquerade (tm), ie: the continuous effort of vampires to hide in plain sight, as an aware and united mankind could very possibly be an existential threat.

On the plus side, the script is honestly decent, if somewhat lazy in its use of clan tropes, but still pleasant enough.

On the minus side, it is cheaply made. Very cheaply. Clan Toreador is fittingly alluring, Clan Ventrue dignified, and so on, because it's rather easy to find good-looking actors.
The Nosferatu are appalling. They personify the horror of the beast within, the uncontrollable, raging animal instinct. They're ... bald.

Same goes for visual effects. They're bad, even for the 90s. Shape-shifting is awful. Any werewolf movie did it better. Heck, even the abysmal Manimal series did it better 15 years prior.
And yeah, everyone can shape-shift into a wolf for some reason. I mean, who wouldn't want to turn into a 60-pounds canine who can't speak, use a gun or operate door handles?

Also, the script plays fast and loose with the rules, but hey, telly is not TTRPG, so one has to adapt.

All in all, it's short and rather nice, and quite possibly very accessible to a non-player.

Dexter

Serial killer thrillers constitute a tired genre, but "Trap" is executed *almost* well. I saw nothing clearly woke.

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the film revolves around a pop concert by "Lady Raven", who is played by Shyamalan's daughter, Saleka. This may be nepotism, but it's not DEI. Interestingly, the concert looks and sounds like standard pop, because it pretty much is. Saleka is a pop artist, and she wrote, performed, and produced the music. Respekt. She is on Spotify with 200K monthly listeners. (To give you a reference, 200K monthly is on par with semi-known indie bands like Temples, !!!, and Bodega.)

Much of the film sacrifices realism for the sake of the story. The unrealism got unbearable with the police/FBI. Not even the FBI in our clown world reality would be so... clownish.

Shyamalan is overrated. He is a schlock writer who throws logic out the window and, at best, assumes his audience consists of retards. He has a reputation for creating woke movies. Being woke requires accepting mutually conflicting propositions as true. This is why woke writers cannot write logical stories.

Is the serial killer character's back story intended as an attack on conservative values and civilization itself? Maybe. However, Shyamalan's interviews about this film do not indicate such intent.

If you are looking for a very Hollywood serial killer thriller, then by all means go ahead. However, if you want realism and substance, look elsewhere.
