Nothing woke. This is sort of a Christmas movie I guess. It's a dark comedy but there's more drama than outright comedy. The humor that's
there works well and there are some funny moments. I wouldn't even say it has a happy ending though. Don't be scared away by Paul Rudd he's not his usual over the top goofy self and much more toned down here. It's an ex con released before the holidays who's trying to go straight and do right by his family for Christmas. If you want a break from the sappy rom com holiday movies give this one a try.

The only woke is the main couple is mixed race and there is a secondary gay couple in the 1st episode that didn't show up in the second one so
that may be a very minor thing. This is listed as a mystery comedy and i's a couple that goes to an island retreat where the wife finds a cell phone
from a missing couple. The acting is ok but the story is all over the place and the writing is very lazy. There's huge leaps in logic that make no sense and characters acting unrealistically. So the wife finds a 15 year old bust flip phone in the jungle so naturally she hunts down another one and buys it so she can swap sim cards and see the contents. She sees nothing suspicious but acts like she does and starts researching the couple on the phone. She finds out they went missing during a hurricane on the island. Again nothing suspicious but she acts like she discovered some big mystery and starts obsessing. Then about
2 scenes later she's telling her husband all these historical details like she's now an expert on the case. They both just decide there is some big mystery and they are going to investigate around the island and figure it out. It's absurd and the 2 of them are about the most insufferable and stupid couple you can imagine. They just run around the island like idiots on a play date never thinking once about contacting the police about finding evidence in a missing persons case. The whole show is jumping back and forth between the missing couple and dumber and dumber P.I. The humor is eye rolling cringe and not funny in the least and the
story just isn't interesting enough to keep your attention. 2 episodes was enough for me.

An older lesser known thanksgiving movie from the 90's. It's the home for the holidays disfunctional family comedy. Good acting
and some great humor. The only woke thing is the brother (played by Downey Jr) is gay and he has an equal story line. I'm only giving it a 1 because unlike today it's not preachy about it, there's no victimhood, it's never in your face obnoxious with any part of it and the character isn't pushed into the front of the story. He's just an equal part of the story like all the other characters. This was 1995 when Downey Jr was pretty drugged out at this point and it's very obvious. His performance in hilarious but you can definitely see the drug use coming through in his jacked up erratic character portrayal. Still a great Thanksgiving movie.

The first couple of episodes had a lot of promise and started off great but then it started to go downhill and completely fell apart by the
final couple episodes. The acting is pretty good but the story and writing while good at the start collapse pretty quickly. It's also based on
a true story but very, very loosely, as in most of this never happened. This is one of those shows that just wants to be weird and throw as many mysteries at out as possible while answering very few of them. The answers at the end you do get don't hold up to any sort of logic. Everybody in this a horrible person and plain unlikable outside of the main family. So the premise is this family moves into a new house and gets threatening letters from someone called the watcher. Except there are only ever 2 letters and they aren't even that threatening. If these people would of just ignored the letters and dealt with their annoying neighbors like any real person would have this would of never happened. This couple is so easily swayed it's infuriating, one comment and they are instantly convinced the watcher is some new person without any thought or evidence even when it makes no logical sense at all. They don't do anything a normal rational person would do in this
situation. You have what appears to be a community effort including police corruption and they just do nothing. How do they not have an attorney or contact the state police, or the state A.G office. The writing gets lazier and more full of holes the further into it you go. While the show in itself isn't overly woke there is the token 19 year old black kid who lives out his moms house and runs a security company out of a van. Right, that's who your hire for security. The white 16 year old daughter is naturally immediately infatuated with him. The black female
private investigator seems like a DEI miscast. There's a few random comments throughout as like black kid makes a comment about how him walking into a police statin with a layer is different for him then a white person, and the daughter posts a public video calling her parents racist because they don't want her seeing a black guy,
not because he's 19 and she's 16. There's a few others as well. Actually now that I think about it the only 2 people that are portrayed as decent normal and smart are the 2 black characters. I made it all the way to the end as the first 3 or 4 episodes really do grab you and have an excellent setup just be prepared for a big letdown if you decide to watch it.

It's not overly woke despite the mixed race couple. The lead actor is a trans male pretending to be female. It's pretty obvious right from the start. There is an out of nowhere make out scene with trans and a woman. It is completely pointless to the story and feels so forced in just for the agenda. The acting is not great. The pace is very slow choosing to spend a lot of time on the family drama. The story makes no sense with holes everywhere in the writing. While I did finish it I wasn't paying a lot of attention for the last half hour so I may have missed some things. These 'creatures' let's call them, that are chasing her don't ever actually do anything. They just chase her them stop scream and reach towards her. Yes it's creepy but after the first couple time you realize nothing is
going to happen, and it's no longer effective. Then there is the weird groundhog day affect when they scream. It just is it's never explained. The creatures seem to want to reproduce by catching you sleeping and spitting eggs in you mouth that then travel to the ovaries. Last I checked that's not how that works, I mean they would end up in
the stomach. The 2 guys in the hallway shooting at each other was stormtrooper levels of aiming. There's small things like the family showing up at the resort with a dog who just vanished never to be seen again. Lazy writing again. There's not any blood or gore to speak of save one scene so if that's your thing don't bother.

These awful action comedies are becoming a genre all there own. At this point I would settle for just average. For woke there's the usual
DEI casting, the strong, smart can do anything black female, the incompetent bumbling white male. There are some capable actors here but they are giving nothing to work with from this writing. Walberg's character is a little too stupid. This is a top tier secret spy agency that apparently is a 50 and up job. I mean 59 year old Berry is unbelievable as an active field agent and her stunts are laughable. She just looks awkward and slow in her action scenes. Even Wahlberg who looks more capable is recruited at 54. Really? These agents appear to know nothing about blending in and stealth as they all stand out like a sore thumb. Berry is like the geriatric terminator easily killing her way through everything in sight including hand to hand with multiple
larger younger men. Then a female villain just manhandles and beats up the much larger Wahlberg, the gets easily beat by Berry as she effortlessly picks her up and slams her down backwards in a suplex that I burst out laughing at. I will say the action scenes at least are done a bit better than these types of movies but it's still no enough and I gave up at 45 minutes.

I don't believe there is anything woke here. The casting diversity doesn't seem to be out of hand with the population ethnicity of New Zealand. The acting is great the humor is on point, well written and delivered. I found it one of the funnier movies I've seen in a while. It's a little on the cheesy side but it's a 2011 rom-com what do you expect. There is a nice balance where sometimes it goes right to the edge with a goofy scene but doesn't cross that line where it becomes to much and turns into stupidity (like a lot of modern comedies). A soundtrack mostly by Queen with an unexpectedly hilarious end credits sequence as a bonus to wrap it all up.

This is one of those dark comedy crime drama movies where everything is a comedy of errors and coincidence. It's pretty middle of the road as far as these go. It's not really very funny though. The acting is ok but it's one of those movie where everybody is an idiot and keeps doing the stupidest things possible to keep unnecessarily escalating the situation. It's all get a little annoying after a while and everything starts really stretching the believability. I was getting pretty bored with it by the end but it's not the worst movie of it's kind. As for woke there is the now required mixed race couple and selection of DEI casting including the female POC detective. It also seemed like all the male characters where portrayed as betas or morons and just a little dumber to the slightly smarter females. This includes the sister brother leads where the sister has a family and is successful while the brother is single and a complete failure and loser.

Why are so many movies nowadays based around unlikable characters. The idea here is a socially awkward married man meets his new neighbor who for some reason decides he wants to be friends and invites him into his life. Paul Rudd is great and most of the acting is fine, that's not really the problem. There is a genre for the awkward outcast comedy and when done it can be hilarious. But there is a line that goes to far and this movie steps over it and then takes off running. Robinsons portrayal isn't just awkward it's off-putting and borderline mental disorder. I can't imagine anyone wanting to be around someone like this. He has no filter and just blurts out anything. Something like getting his clothes dirty or wet will result in him screaming profanities and acting like something major just happened. He has some weird creepy daydreams about his neighbor that are not funny but disturbing. He gets invited to his neighbors house to meet and hang out with his friends. They set up a little fun light boxing match and he full on sucker punches and almost knocks him out, then starts acting like a toddler putting a bar of soap in his mouth and 'I'm sorry, I was a bad boy" over and over dancing around. It's disturbing and I had enough at this point and stopped at 30 minutes. Rudd's character seems pretty normal and it is not believable in the least that he would want this guy around. This feels like one of those guys that eventually snaps and goes on a rampage. There was nothing woke to report when I stopped it but I just couldn't take it anymore.

You won't find anything really new story wise here. Basically an organization stages 'games' at a location by trapping random people inside while they are hunted by 4 people for points while it's streamed and bets placed. The acting is decent enough for this type of movie and there are cameo's galore for horror fans. The blood and gore FX are extreme, over the top and very well done. There's some very brutal graphic stuff here not for the squeamish. It takes a bit to really get going but by the 30 minute mark it really starts to go nuts. There are unfortunately some small writing problems like
characters doing stupid things or not seeing or hearing things they realistically should of. For example they cut off all communications include internet service except their own private network. However an 11 yr old goes on his laptop and searches for network then just simply connects to it as if it's a completely unsecured network. Then he just somehow has instant access to their entire system. They are locked inside a hotel with the front doors being glass and not one person tries to break the doors or a window to escape. There's also the horror staple of being constantly chased and people trying to kill you and not once
does anyone bother to arm themselves with all the possible weapons laying around the hotel. The woke score is a little difficult. There is a group of 3 hotel guests that appear to be there drinking and partying. One of them appears to be obviously gay and flamboyant and the 2 females are seen making out. Nothing is ever said about them being lesbian and it could possibly be just drunk partying too much. Also the seemingly gay character is also never shown doing anything or
saying anything to imply that he is actually gay. I decided not to give anything woke for this one as a result. For me this is probably a 3.5 but I don't think it's worth a 4 so I kept it at 3.
